CURRENTLY IN THE DADIAN GALLERY: “LIVING TRADITION:  Icons for the Liturgical Year by Davydov & Shalamova” Lovingly created and transported from Russia, 35 contemporary icons continue, extend, and reinterpret the centuries-old tradition of art used as a powerful and responsible instrument for preaching a visual sermon.  Join us for the ARTIST’S TALK AND RECEPTION on Tuesday, July 15, 4:30  - 5:30 pm in the boardroom.  Take this rare opportunity to learn about icon writing from Philip Davydov and engage in Q & A about his creative process, research, materials, content and imagery!  Consider this your invitation to connect with the face of holiness.

Wesley Community,

I am sad to report the death of Professor Emerita of Christian Education Mary Alice Douty Edwards on July 10 at age 100.

Mary Alice was hired in 1957 to teach one course in the recently established Department of Christian Education.  In March 1959, President Trott advanced her to full-time teaching and announced that the Master of Religious Education degree program would begin that fall.  She taught at Wesley until 1983.  She served as Interim Dean when Phil Wogaman stepped down.  President Doug Lewis remembered her dedication to her students, her love of the institution and her firm resolve.

Mary Alice was born in 1913 in Rochester, NY, but always thought of Baltimore as her “home town.”  She was a graduate of Goucher College and held graduate degrees from Union Theological Seminary (MA) and Columbia University (Ed.D) and had more than twenty years of experience in public school education and with the Baltimore Conference Board of Education.  Her teaching focus was on effective educational ministry for the whole congregation.  That concern prompted her to design such courses as Life Span Ministry, Children and Religion, Ministry to the Aging, and The Family and Christian Education.  She also offered courses in Religious Drama, Worship in Christian Education, and Camping as occasional electives.

Phil Wogaman recalled that Mary Alice was the last surviving faculty member who taught in Westminster, MD before the seminary moved to Washington in 1958.  It was a smaller group in those days.  But, like our faculty today, Mary Alice exemplified the essential quality of this community: the care professors have for their students.  I remember her best as my advisor as a student, and the fact that she helped to be a matchmaker for Drema and me.

There will be a service celebrating Mary Alice's life in Oxnam Chapel on Tuesday, September 2 at 4:30 pm.

David McAllister-Wilson
