Field Education at Wesley Theological Seminary

Options for Field Education

Practice in Ministry and Mission provides the opportunity to integrate classroom learning with practical experience in a teaching congregation or other setting for ministry. Placement in an approved teaching congregation or other setting for ministry (e.g., campus ministry, social justice ministry) in which students experience a broad range of ministerial learning activities. These internships involve 800 hours of supervised ministry for M.Div. students and 400 hours for M.A. students. Students can satisfy this requirement through one of the following means:

  • Part-time Year-long Internships
  • Full-time Summer Internships
  • Full-time Year-long Internships
  • Student Pastor Program

In all instances, Learning Partners from the host placements will help students develop individual learning goals. They will engage together in regular theological reflection and in evaluation of student learning.

Part-time Year-long Internships

Part-time Year-long Internships

During a part-time year-long internship, students are involved in the life of a congregation or ministry setting for eight to ten working hours each week through the academic year (including the winter months but not normally the summer).  Students engaged in part-time internships will also attend an on-campus colloquy led by a faculty member and a pastoral co-leader over the course of the internships.  There is a required day of PMM orientation held at the seminary for all students and their learning partners prior to the beginning of these part-time internships. One part-time year-long internship is worth 4 academic credits.  PMM placements are determined by May 1 for the following fall semester.

Full-time Summer Internships

Full-time Summer Internships

During full-time summer internships, students are engaged in ministry for 40 hours each week for ten weeks.  Students may not be registered for any other courses at Seminary during the 10 weeks.  Colloquies are held as hybrid on-line courses during the summer internship, inlcuding two face-to-face meetings; one in mid April and one at the beginning of the Fall Semester.  M. Div. students may utilize any combination of a  full-time summer internship and part-time year-long internships to satisfy their PMM degree requirement; M.Div. students utilizing a non-congregational placement during the summer internship, however, are expected to fulfill the remainder of their PMM in a congregation setting. One full-time summer internship is worth 4 academic credits.  PMM Placements for the summer are determined by March 1.

Full-time Year-long Internships

Full-time Year-long Internships

In specific approved situations, students may satisfy the internship requirement by means of a full-time internship year.  An internship year involves a full-time (35-40 hours per week) placement in a ministry setting for a full academic year (Fall and Spring semester).  While engaged in a full-time Internship Year, students may not be registered for any other courses at Seminary except under special circumstances.  One full-time year long internship is worth 8 academic credits.  Students interested in an internship should review the guidelines and contact the Practice in Ministry and Mission Office.  Download the Instructions for Internship Guide here.

Student Pastor Program

Student Pastor Program

Wesley's Student Pastor Program (SPP) is available only to students who are serving pastoral appointments at the time they enter Wesley Theological Seminary.  Students who receive pastoral appointments after beginning studies at Wesley may use their pastoral appointment as PMM placements through one of the other options listed but not through the Student Pastor Program. Prospective students who think they might qualify for this program should contact Rev. Tom Brunkow (SPP Coordinator), LaTaska Nelson (SPP Administrator), or the Admissions Office.  More
