Wesley Offers New Doctor of Ministry Track at Wesley House, Cambridge, England on Transformative Leadership in Wesleyan Perspective

May 06 2014

Wesley Theological Seminary unveiled this spring two new Doctor of Ministry tracks. Transformative Leadership in Wesleyan Perspective and Creative Ministry for Church Renewal in a Changing World will both convene in Cambridge. Enrollment in the inaugural cohort is limited to 20 students. The first courses will begin December 29, 2015.

Wesley Theological Seminary developed this track specifically for active clergy from across the globe who are seeking to enhance their leadership skills and practices. Courses include “Leadership in the Wesleyan Spirit,” taught by Dr. Lovett Weems; “Transforming Community,” taught by Dr. Douglas Powe; “Old Testament Perspectives on Transformative Leadership,” taught by Dr. Bruce Birch, “Reclaiming Wesleyan Theology for Ministry,” taught by Dr. Ted Campbell, and “Spirituality for Personal and Congregational Formation,” taught by Dr. Jane Leach. See the full list and schedule of the coursework.

“Each cohort of students in this D.Min. track will be international in character with colleagues and dialogue that reflect the global nature of today's church,” says Birch. “The faculty teaching these courses will also be drawn from the best scholar-teachers available in the global church.”

In addition to the special focus on leadership in a Wesleyan spirit, this track is unique because of its location at Wesley House, the historic Methodist study center in the heart of Cambridge University. The course “Wesleyan Roots for a Socially Engaged Ministry,” taught by Dr. Tim Macquiban, will take added advantage of the location by including travel around the United Kingdom. Other faculty members include Dr. Elaine Heath and Dr. Dion Forster.

“Wesley House, Cambridge, has historically been one of the great centers for Methodist theological study, and Cambridge University is one of the world's most distinguished theological centers,” says Birch, who serves as onsite coordinator of the Transformative Leadership in Wesleyan Perspective track. “Now Wesley Theological Seminary will offer a Doctor of Ministry degree in partnership with Wesley House that will draw on these resources for cutting-edge reflections on ministry in a changing world.”

Sessions for this track convene twice a year, with two week-long classes per session. Wesley will accept applications for this track beginning June 15. A second track located in Cambridge – focused on Creative Ministry in a Changing World will be announced soon.
