Emerging Ministries Program

Wesley Theological Seminary offers the Emerging Ministries Program in order to develop pastoral leaders for the emerging generation.

We have begun a cooperative internship program with Washington-area emerging congregations such as Cedar Ridge Community Church, founded by Brian McLaren. These internships include mentoring, spiritual formation and missional service, along with classroom learning at the seminary.

The program includes:

1. Field placement at an emerging church setting and mentoring by emerging leaders

2. Spiritual formation group with other emerging interns, in conjunction with the Covenant Discipleship program in the student's first year

3. Practice in Ministry & Mission (field education) colloquy (in the student's second and third years), with other emerging interns

4. Curricular course offerings relevant to emerging church concerns
-- existing courses in mission and evangelism taught by Dr. Sathi Clarke and Dr. Scott Kisker
-- new courses:

  • American Christianity and Postmodern Culture
  • The Mission-Shaped Church: Ecclesiology for the 21st Century taught by Dr. Sathi Clarke
  • Church-Planting, New Church Development and Congregational Revitalization

5. Optional semester abroad at Cliff College, Peak district, England, studying mission-shaped ecclesiology and the emerging church, under the direction of Dr. Phil Meadows

6. Fostering emerging initiatives, such as the D.C. Cohort and UMerging

The Emerging Ministries Program is a focus area within Wesley's Master of Divinity degree. Read a few more details about the requirements for this focus area.
