PARADISE IN THE BALANCE
January 22 - March 12, 2010
A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, February, 11 at noon.
Paradise in the Balance is an exhibition of mixed media drawings, paintings, and collage work addressing our relationship with the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it. Luckett brings her unique view of the world and sense of humor to her work through unusual juxtapositions that resonate visually and metaphorically.
"Balancing Act" depicts a chicken nesting atop a cardboard box, which also doubles as a factory with a barred door. Antlers sprout from the side of the box, alluding to our treatment of animals as inanimate objects, whose purpose is revenue rather than sustenance. The box balances precariously on top of a steam roller, which in turn is atop a small turtle. Not only is Luckett a master of composition, but also of allegory and story telling, all of which is depicted in her finely honed drawings and paintings.
"I fashion a language of symbols that tell a story. Each ink/watercolor drawing or collage is built around these real or symbolic objects. They may seem unrelated to each other, but actually reflect the increasing impact of humankind upon Earth's living biospheres... The fun for me is in trying out unusual combinations of forms and solving the mysteries of the links between them. I hope viewers will recognize questions posed in most of the pictures, questions that ask each of us how we are called to be responsible stewards of the wonderful, but rapidly diminishing Web of Life."
Rosemary's work has been exhibited in many galleries and art centers including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Montpelier Cultural Arts Center, Franz Bader Gallery, Catholic University (Washington, DC), Woods Gallery (Severna Park, MD), Grounds For Sculpture (Hamilton, NJ), Woman Made Gallery (Chicago), Visions Gallery (Albany, NY), Target Gallery (Alexandria, VA) and numerous other galleries around the country.
