Is Online Learning Right for Me?

How will I access online courses? Expand

All online courses use Blackboard which can be accessed using the following instructions

What will the courses be like? Expand

In place of in-class lectures and discussions you will have videos, asynchronous discussions and assignments.  Different instructors will require different things.  The course will take place in Blackboard.

How do I interact with my teacher or other students? Expand

Communication takes place through the online tools in Blackboard.  In your class you will often have discussion boards.  Your instructor will give you written feedback on your assignments and you always have the option to email through Blackboard or your own email account.

What is learning like? Expand

Online learning is not for everyone.  It requires a different approach than many of us have been taught in school thus far.  Students need to have self discipline and be organized.  You have to log in regularly and will have things due every week.  This means you have to set up time for yourself to do your school work.

A  lot of students report that once they have adjusted to this they learn just as much online as in person.  Some students also have reported that the adjustment they make to succeed in the online environment helps them have better study habits and learn better in in-person classes.

People who learn effectively in an online setting are:

  • Self-motivated and willing to accept responsibility for their own learning,
  • Self-disciplined, able to budget their time effectively and willing to stick to deadlines,
  • Comfortable with technology, especially web-based and internet technologies,
  • Willing to accept the challenge of being an independent learner,
  • Willing to take the initiative and contact their instructor when they have questions or concerns regarding the course,
  • Able to communicate well in writing,
  • Aware that the flexibility inherent in many online courses does not mean the course will be easy.
