Field Education at Wesley: Practice in Ministry and Mission

The field education experience at Wesley prepares seminarians to serve the community effectively as ministers of the Gospel in a culturally diverse world.  The Practice in Ministry and Mission (PM&M) office collaborates with congregations (of various denominations) and nonprofits (hospitals, college campus ministries, retirement communities, social justice organizations, charitable support, etc.) to setup internships at approved ministry teaching settings.

PM&M Program

Churches & Agencies page

The prerequisite to start and internship (field education) for PMM or SPP is 24 credit hours (including Spiritual Formation for the Practice of Ministry courses: MM101 and MM102). Seminarians can fulfill their PM&M requirement over two consecutive summers or one academic year.

Summer internships are full-time (25 hours/week for 9 weeks).

Fall/spring (academic year) internships are part-time (8-9 hours per week for the duration of the academic year).

Questions? Please contact PM&M Office.

Student Pastor Program (SPP)

For seminarians who are the lead pastor of a congregation that begins before entering Wesley Theological Seminary or will begin before the internship begins. See the information on the PM&M program.

If you are a lead pastor interested in applying to Wesley, please discuss this field education option with our Admissions team upon application.

Seminarians who receive a pastorate after beginning studies at Wesley may use their pastoral appointment as an SPP placement.

Questions?  Please contact the SPP team or the PM&M office (PMMAssistant@WesleySeminary.edu).

Potential Placement

Sites are annually invited or may at any time request to become a PMM listed site. Seminarians are able to view these sites on the Blackboard organization PMM-001 PMM Ministry Setting Listed Sites by contacting the PM&M office.

Persons who are lead pastors are designated as Student Pastors (SPP).

Each seminarian seeking a placement may also propose a ministry setting that is either a congregation or a nonprofit. More information for sites may be found on Congregations and Nonprofits and Current Learning Partnerships.

The complete seminarian placement process for both PMM and SPP placements is found on Applying for PM&M-the one stop spot for the PM&M placement process.

The PM&M faculty and staff are available to advise and assist you with all aspects of the PM&M program, which includes student pastors. The PM&M office is located at Wesley's main campus in the Kresge building, office suite K-107. Please feel free to contact us.
