Questions and thoughts in conversation with Isaiah
~ Isaiah 58:9b–14
What is the yoke upon us? How are we - responding to, resisting, participating in, or perhaps benefiting from, an ethos of manipulation, division, and fear?
What if my own belly is not full? Conversely, if I have more than enough, what will I have to sacrifice to satisfy the needs of the afflicted?
Can I trust you, God, to exceed my fears and shine within and upon me so that I might see – even dare to be – this light?
If I trust you, God, will you give me this day my daily bread, and give us life despite death? Will there be food in food-deserts within cities parched by greed?
Alive by the waters of baptism, I am a seedling, growing in Christ and nourished by the Gospel. God is the well-spring of our being. How can I share the good news of clean water with those who do not have this most basic human need?
From the throes of many kinds of exile and exclusion we come, to build a new thing. Migrants, immigrants, refugees, neighbors, everyone yearning to be and breathe freely: come, let us build a place where all our children are free.
Repairers of the breach, what must we do to restore these streets and bring justice and peace?
Keeping the Sabbath holy, can we refrain from overworking and tearing down boundaries meant for wellness; indeed, wholeness?
Can we remember to delight in the way of God and commit to living as we preach? If so, we will honor God with our lives.
If we help and lift each other up, delighting in God, together we will live beyond our best imaginings…
Encouraged by our ancestors, called by our descendants, guided by the grace of God, can we repair what is broken?
Reflection: Thus, saith the Lord…how will we respond?
