For Your Name’s Sake ~ Psalm 25: 4-11
There’s no getting around the fact that I have my mother’s eyes and my father’s dimple. I am – often without having to say a word to people in the community of my youth – Faye and Edgar’s daughter. As such, I am expected to meet a certain standard of behavior…one befitting of my parents and my family name.
I am also part of another family. In this other family, I’m not identified by my last name, the shape of my eyes, or the dimple in my left cheek. In this other family, I am co-heirs with Christ; as such, I share in both his suffering and his inheritance. While my family relationship comes from Christ’s death and resurrection, my family resemblance grows as my relationship evolves from member to disciple. In other words, it deepens the more I reflect characteristics of the Most High God.
Throughout scripture, God calls us to “Be ye holy, as I am holy.” When I cry out “Show me your ways, Lord and teach me your path,” I open myself to greater intimacy with the Alpha and the Omega, who knew me before I was born. The more I yield and allow myself to be led in the ways of the Divine One - to love, to show compassion, to be faithful, to forgive - the more I reflect the Divine Light.
Dear God, you are always true to your fundamental character, not for me, but “for your name’s sake.” For your name’s sake, I want to look just like you.
Amen.
