Resting in God’s Sovereignty
Psalm 46:1–8
W
hen life does not go as planned, it is natural for some ounce of worry and frustration to set in. It may happen that we projected to be in a certain place in our ministerial, professional, relational, and financial life at a given timeline, and no matter how we grind to achieve those goals there seems to be no visible result. What ensues is the loss of our peace of mind because those goals have in some ways become like a sword of Damocles hanging over our heads.
As life partners, we often remind one another of God’s sovereignty when we find ourselves facing setbacks in different compartments of our life together. After making a conscious decision to rest in God’s sovereignty, we have witnessed things unfold in our lives individually and collectively that pointed us to God’s providence and grace. As a couple that has developed through a gradual soulful connection sustained by the grace and peace of God, we have learned to make our marriage a stream of the river of God’s love, not only to ourselves and our offspring, but also to the community around us …whether in our respective families, at our workplaces, or in the ecclesial polity. Moreover, the love you sow in and around you always comes back to you in a manifold way. Whilst believing in God’s sovereignty is paramount to Christianity, such a trust must lead us to walk in His love, and to receive His peace. This is, to our estimation, the foundation of our success as a couple.
Therefore, events may have taken place in the past beyond your control that you cannot change, but what you can do is to choose the present. During this Lenten season, may you choose to make the one who controls tomorrow your refuge; ask the Great I AM for the strength you need today. God is with you and will lead you to experience divine peace, here and now.
Reflection: What are some areas of your life that you need to be reminded that God is present? Will you invite God in and allow him to be a present help to provide what you need?
