Students are introduced to the rich heritage of the Christian contemplative tradition through the lives and works of saints and mystics who sought and experienced a more intimate connection with God. Engaging a variety of authors, texts, and traditions from the sixth century to the present day, students will critically analyze, discuss, debate, and reflect on the implications of these traditions for contemporary Christian worship and spirituality. The course will include practical application of some specific contemplative practices. Saints and mystics to be explored include Teresa of Ávila, John of the Cross, Julian of Norwich, Thomas Merton, Simone Weil, and Howard Thurman.
The Arts and Sacred Space (RA-108-IP) | Jessica Houff | Tues 1:30-3:30
The Arts and Sacred Space explore all varieties of art within religious and spiritual spaces. Students will explore principles of accessible design, artistic proclamation, and utilize all senses for an architectural setting through artistic expression and collaborative work with students and the Chapel Elder. Through required readings, discussion, and collaboration, participants will learn from artists, theologians, and pastors to explore the impact of art in worship, particularly how to create spaces accessible and enjoyable for all abilities. Participants in conjunction with the professor will define sacred space and contribute to Wesley's Oxnam Chapel for worship. We will develop artistic design proposals for artistic elements in community worship spaces, taking into account the liturgical calendar, unique readings, storytelling, and special celebrations. No artistic experience necessary.
